Games Are the new Social Networks

Over the past decade, social media went from something that barely existed to being used across the world

Facebook counts over 2.2 billion users. Instagram has more than 1 billion users and is rapidly growing.

There is Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Pinterest and also Twitch and Youtube.

Even though it's called "social" media, the connections are often superficial.

This has caused a loneliness epidemic and made people yearn for connection with others. A need that seems to be solved by games. Especially among the younger generations.

Fortnite has over 200 million users but it doesn't seem to be just a "game", it's turned into a place where you hang out. It just happens to be online.

Half of the teens teens that play Fortnite says it helps them keep up with friends. 44% says they have made at least one new friend through the game and 39% says it helped them bond with a sibling. According to a study.

Roblox, another game with strong social elements, just announced they surpassed 100 million monthly users.

As people seem to be moving away from public social media and more towards small private groups, it seems very likely that games are the go-to substitute.

I would not be surprised if the next major acquisition of Facebook will be Roblox. Given that it has a lot more users than Instagram at the time it was acquired, it will be for a lot of money as well.
